It is sad to see them go but they were too high and too close to the house
and they are now felling them one by one...

Always sad to see a tree go down but sometimes the only option. 40+ here?

When trees are close to the house they can become dangerous. I can see that you'll get lots of light and space when there are 56 rings. They must have been huge!
I have a fur tree in the garden and that is becoming big too, it's about 30 years old. I cut down the lower branches and my garden looks so much bigger and I have lots more sun again too. So I understand your reaction.
